IG Arena × Its Surrounding Shopping Streets

In this series, Aispo-kun takes you on a journey of exploration to spots related to sports teams and athletes based in Aichi Prefecture. This article is one of the special features that focuses on the shopping streets around IG Arena, which has just opened.

Collaboration between IG Arena and its four surrounding shopping streets is under way in programs planned to add to the approaches toward the arena the enjoyable experience of strolling. The businesses operating on the streets are considering providing visitors with various services, such as special benefits to IG Arena spectators.

Yanagihara-dori Shopping Street

When you face south on this shopping street, you can have a remote view of the Chubu Electric Power MIRAI TOWER (formerly Nagoya TV Tower).

Access: Approximately 500 m from IG Arena

Retro-looking roofed sidewalks welcome you.

This is the shopping street nearest to IG Arena. Stretching over approximately 600 m from north to south, the shopping street is full of the retro atmosphere of the Showa era. It is lined with about 45 businesses that deal in a wide variety of goods and services. With a university campus recently opened near the street, the number of new businesses targeting young people is increasing.

The two-day Yanagihara-dori Summer Festival has various enjoyable features, such as parades, food stalls, and stage performances.

Benten-dori Shopping Street

This shopping street stretches over approximately 400 m east from Joshin Station on the Subway Tsurumai Line.

Access: Approximately 1.2 km from IG Arena

Enjoy a tour of Shichifukujin (Seven Gods of Good Fortune) statues while shopping!

Established in 1915, this shopping street has a history of over 100 years. The street is spotted with stone statues of the Shichifukujin (Seven Gods of Good Fortune). In the past, the nearby area used to be home to dyeing, cotton milling, and textile factories, with a bustle of factory workers. Today as well, festivals, pop-up markets, and other events attract many visitors, invigorating the street.

During the Tenno Festival (Benten Festival), a local festival held every June, the street is lined with approximately 250 food stalls.
A heartwarming message is attached to each of the adorable Shichifukujin stone statues.

Endoji Shopping Street

The arcade structure over this street, completely renovated in 2015, features a modern design.

Nagoya’s oldest shopping street, lined with unique businesses

Located roughly halfway between Nagoya Station and Nagoya Castle, this shopping street appeals to people by combining the atmosphere of an olden-day shopping area with new culture. Originated in 1612, the street is lined with not only long-established businesses but also unique new businesses run by younger generations, pleasing you while you simply walk through it.

One of the most popular specialties of Cafe Restaurant & Guest House Nagonoya is the breakfast special. The cafe-cum-guesthouse is loved as a place of friendly communication between the locals and tourists.
Kotohira-jinja Shrine is popular for its fortune slips written in the Nagoya dialect, which will be a perfect memento for your visit.

Endoji Honmachi Shopping Street

The arcade roof is designed to retain the atmosphere of a Showa-era shopping street, while the decorations and lights are all in a uniform warm color.

A nostalgic shopping street that is friendly to the common people

This retro-looking arcaded street extends west from Egawa Line, forming a pair with Endoji Shopping Street. It was almost completely destroyed during the Great Nagoya Air Raid of 1945, but it was rebuilt in five years. The street is lined with businesses for everyday use by the common people, including long-established Japanese-style confectioneries and cafés, as well as supermarkets frequented by the locals.
